Understanding Dental Implants
An implant consists of a titanium post, an abutment, and a restoration. Implants may be appropriate for one missing tooth, several teeth, or a full arch. Before placement, Dr. Aviles completes a consultation and may use a Planmeca ProMax® 3D scanner to evaluate teeth and jawbone structure and plan precise placement.
The Placement Process
Gums and jawbone are numbed with local anesthesia. Nitrous oxide and prescription medications may be offered when appropriate for anxious patients. Dr. Aviles places the implant post through a small gum incision. During recovery, temporary restoration may be provided while the gums and bone heal around the post. The former overview described this healing as typically about four months.
Treatment Benefits
Bone grafting or a sinus lift may be recommended when jawbone volume is insufficient. Dr. Aviles may collaborate with a skilled periodontist when advanced preliminary treatment is needed.
